Today’s Rambouillet sheep breed is the product of a herd of Spanish Merino sheep sent to Louis XVI’s estate in Rambouillet France in the late 1700s. Rambouillet were imported to America and are the foundation breed for most herds in the Western US. Their wool has a short staple and lots of crimp, making the resulting yarn springy and elastic. Like Merino, Rambouillet wool is extremely soft and features a low luster.

Little Bird Yarn Co. specializes in creating handspun yarn from hand-dyed fiber. Because each skein is handmade, yarn weight might vary slightly. All yarn is spun and plied on my spinning wheel in a smoke free but dog-friendly home. Skeins are washed in a mild soap and re-skeined before measuring yardage.
